Weekends Away

As well as a varied programme of weekly walks and hikes taking advantage of the excellent walking country around Manchester and Salford, the group occassionally organises weekends away.

We have had now had many weekends away: in Whitby, Kettlewell, Malham, Conwy, Hartington, Mankinholes, Arnside Youlgreave (Peak District), Ravenstor (Peak District), Slaidburn (Forest of Bowland) and in Windermere (Lake District) All were very successful, the latest being The Sill. We like to try out different parts of this beautiful country of ours!

There is a good turnout for the events and the YHs we stayed at were fantastic.

Weekend away to be confirmed 5th/6th/7th October.

Another great weekend in North Yorkshire staying at the YH Ingleton superbly placed for wonderful walking. On the Saturday many of us set off to climb 'Ingleborough'. Some walked along the Kingsdale path to Yordas Cave which was a wonderful experience.
Faced with the prospect of bad weather we were really lucky on the Saturday, the sun shone for us!
On the Sunday we climbed the Ingleton Waterfalls, a strenuous walk but well worth it!

Hadrians Wall 2017
The Sill, Hadrians Wall October 2017

Another great weekend away for our group. This time we travelled a little further to the newly opened YH at Hadrians Wall - The Sill. It certainly was a great area for walking.
On the Friday we visited the Roman Fort and Museum at Vindolanda which we all enjoyed.
Margaret´s Saturday walk went eastwards along the wall from the Sill and ending at Brocolitia fort (8.3 miles). The weather was grim to start with but brightened later. It was a great walk.
On the Sunday we walked west along The Wall, ending at Walltown Quarry (6.3 miles) enjoying magnificent views of the open countryside - weather was lovely - all in tee shirts!

What a great 2 night stay in Scarborough! Packed full of great walks, fabulous weather, quiz night and entertainment on Saturday night. The YH we stayed at was superb, well situated for Scarborough centre. We arrived on the Friday afternoon and walked from the hostel along the ‘front’ to Scarborough Castle.
On the Saturday with the sun on our backs we got the bus to Ravenscar and then walked along the Cleveland Way for 10 miles back into Scarborough. Great walking path where we found ‘the best lunch spot in the world’. Well rewarded with a pint of Great Yorkshire Beer at the end!
On the Sunday again a lovely sunny day we drove to the South Bay of Scarborough and walked to Calver Bay and returned back to the Car park for our journey home.

Ambleside in the Lakes – April 2015.

Manchester and Salford Ramblers, Ambleside Ambleside looking beautiful

There was loads of 'greats' on this weekend. Firstly the weather, particularly Saturday which was glorious and made for great walking in this amazing area. The very impressive youth hostel was situated on the banks of Lake Windermere so were we able to sit outside for drinks after a long day walking.

We split up on the Saturday and many went up the 'Horseshoe' whilst others stayed lower and managed to have afternoon tea. On the Sunday we got the open top bus to Grasmere, great for all us bus pass people! Again some went up Alcock Tarn while others wandered leisurely around Grasmere village, coffee and met up with the others later at Dove Cottage. We then took the higher pass from White Moss passing alongside Rydal Water and walked back to Ambleside approx 5 miles.

Whitby in Yorkshire – October 2014.

Manchester and Salford Ramblers, Whitby

Ravenstor – October 2009 – Autumn

Manchester and Salford Ramblers, Peak District 2009 Manchester and Salford Ramblers enjoy a weekend in the Peaks

This was our first weekend away and we learnt a great deal from that. The location was amazing with stunning walks and views throughout the Peak District and the weather was wonderful. We learnt that we must provide a couple of short walks as well as taking advantage of the opportunity for longer walks in the countryside in order to encourage a wide range of ramblers to come and join us.
